Personal Injury Lawyers in Toronto
Toronto is a single-tier municipality, so a fall on a city road or sidewalk means one notice to one government, the City of Toronto. That is simpler than the surrounding regions, but the 10-day clock is exactly the same length and it starts on the day you fall.

Deadlines that apply to you
These are the dates that end claims. Check them first.
If the injury happened on a City of Toronto road or sidewalk and the claim is that it was not kept in repair, written notice must reach the City within 10 days. Toronto is the only Ontario municipality outside the Municipal Act, so the requirement comes from the City of Toronto Act instead.
City of Toronto Act, 2006, S.O. 2006, c. 11, Sched. A, s. 42
In most Ontario claims you have two years from the day you knew, or ought to have known, that you had a claim.
Limitations Act, 2002, S.O. 2002, c. 24, Sched. B, s. 4
Injured in Toronto
Toronto is the only city on this list where the municipal question is simple. There is no regional government above it, so there is one road authority and one notice to serve.
What is not simple is the volume. The expressways carry commuter traffic that does not slow for weather, the streetcar network puts cyclists and car doors in the same metre of road, and the sheer number of insurers operating here means the adjuster on your file has handled a thousand like it.
Get assessed even if you walked away
Injuries that surface three days later are ordinary, and a gap in the medical record is the first thing an adjuster points at. In a serious case the trauma team records become the backbone of the claim.
Serve the City of Toronto within 10 days
Toronto is single-tier, so there is one road authority and one clerk. That removes the question that catches people in Peel and York, but it does not lengthen the deadline.
Chase the footage early
Intersection cameras, streetcar and bus cameras and nearby business systems overwrite on their own schedules, often inside two weeks. A written preservation request in the first days is worth more than any amount of argument later.
The law is the same across Ontario. Who you serve is not.
Toronto is a single-tier municipality, and the only Ontario city that does not fall under the Municipal Act. The City of Toronto is the road authority for city streets and sidewalks, and the 10-day written notice runs under the City of Toronto Act, 2006.

Toronto Transit Commission
An injury on a TTC vehicle or at a TTC station is a claim against the Commission and follows its own notice path, separate from the road authority.
Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre
Sunnybrook is one of the region's adult lead trauma centres, alongside St. Michael's Hospital. Where a catastrophic file starts there, the records are usually the backbone of the claim.
the Gardiner Expressway, the Don Valley Parkway, Highway 401
The Gardiner, the Don Valley Parkway and the 401 through the city account for a disproportionate share of the serious collisions we are called about.

Questions we get every week
The City of Toronto. Toronto is single-tier, so there is no regional government above it and no question about which road authority owns the sidewalk. The notice must be in writing and it must reach the City within 10 days.
That is a claim against the Toronto Transit Commission, not against the road authority, and it follows a different notice path. If it is unclear where the boundary sat, the safe course is to give notice to both.
Your accident benefits come from your own insurer wherever you live. What the location changes is which court the tort claim is issued in and which municipality receives a notice if a road was involved.
No. The statutory deductible, the tort threshold and the limitation period are provincial and identical across Ontario. Anyone telling you a Toronto claim is automatically worth more is selling something.
